Dendrocalamus asper cv. 'Hitam' (Black Asper or Betung Hitam)
This black culmed giant produces great timber and boasts the fastest growth rate of all the big bamboos. It also produces beautiful sweet edible shoots. A must have if you've got the space.
Meaning of name: 'Hitam' is the Indonesian word for Black. Betung is what the Indonesians call 'Asper', hence 'Betung Hitam'

Minimum temperature tolerance: -5°C
Climate: Prefers tropical or subtropical climates, but still tolerates some frost
Light conditions: Full sun
Growth habit: Upright, slightly weeping tops
Growing conditions: Moist, well drained soil. Keep well mulched.
Origin: Indonesia
In Australian conditions, it is unusual to see it taller than 25m. It needs good moisture and high humidity to reach its full potential.
