A major commercially exploited bamboo, also known as Indian Timber bamboo or Spineless Indian bamboo. Native to the Indian subcontinent it is a very useful variety, commonly utilised for making paper, reinforcing rods, construction, scaffolding, mats, furniture, household utensils and and large fishing poles.

Young shoots are slightly bitter and are suited to be pickled prior to being eaten.
