Gigantochloa atroviolacea (Java Black)
Java Black
Typical height: 16m
Typical culm diameter: 10cm
Growth habit: Erect
Temperature tolerance (minimum): -2°C    Quite cold tolerant, though will grow best in tropical conditions.
Origin: Indonesia

This is pure magic in any garden. A beautiful centerpiece if space permits its largish size. It's commonly known as 'Java Black' and features very dark culms with thin green stripes. Fairly tight clumping and erect culms.

This species is the best 'black bamboo' available due to its rich colour, predominant white nodes and its ability to resist colour loss (fading) due to sun exposure (like the other black bamboos do).

The timber is excellent - very dense heavy timber and reasonably thick walled. Great for any sort of construction, furniture, fencing, etc.

Does well in southern temperate climates, though may not reach full height.
