Phyllostachys edulis (Moso Bamboo)

A large running bamboo with excellent quality timber and shoots. Native to China, this species is the most common source of bamboo timber in China for manufacturing and bamboo textiles. Grows best in temperate climates, or cool sub-tropical regions.

Meaning of name: 'edulis' means 'edible' in Latin.

New culms are covered with soft, velvety hairs, which provide protection from insects.

The  common name "Moso" is the Japanese name which is an interpretation of the Chinese name "Mao Zhu", which translates to "Hairy Bamboo"
