Bauhinia purpurea (Purple Orchid Tree)
A beautiful small flowering tree with large orchid-like blooms in shades of purple and pink. Creates a spectacular display when in flower and adds a tropical feel to gardens. Fast growing with an open canopy, great for feature planting or light shade.

In tropical climates it is semi-evergreen, in cooler climates it is deciduous flowering on leafless branches. Quite drought-tolerant once fully established, but they do appreciate an occasional deep soak. Pruning is best after flowering to keep it neat.
