The closed flower hangs from the top of the stem like a pendant and shares the likeness of a shimmering pearl with a pale pink body and magnificent magenta tip. The flower opens to look like a deep sea shell which attracts beneficial insects.

This rare vine encapsulates the treasured tropical essence we all strive for in exotic gardening. The Strongylogon macrobotrys is endemic to the Philippines and prefers moist, well drained soil with a structure to climb upon like the bamboo arbour here.

What an incredible World Bamboo Day we had at our nursery and parklands! With 38 people joining our first tour and 22 in the second, the enthusiasm for bamboo was contagious.

The Costus are commonly known as spiralling gingers, but technically they are not true gingers and regarded as a separate genus. Here at Bamboo Land, we think the Costus are an under utilised plant, great for features or fillers in tropical gardens.
