Bowenia serrulata
A small palm-like plant with bright green shiny leathery leaves with sharply toothed margins. These are forest plants, so require filtered sun, moist, well drained soil, with high humidity. They make a superb feature plant in a shady situation.
It's bipinnate fronds, arising from a subterranean caudex, give it the appearance of a fern. However it is not a fern as its vernacular name and appearance suggest. It is endemic to the vicinity of Byfield, Australia. It is hardy in tropical and subtropical areas, in well drained soil. Prefers a protected moist semi-shaded or shaded position similar to its humid natural forest habitat. It may prove suitable for temperate climates in frost-free areas.
Bowenia serrulata is distinguished from B. spectabilis by the number of crowns. The distributions of the two species do not overlap. (Hill 1998, 2004)
Reproduction:
Bowenia species appear to be pollinated by a species of Miltotranes weevil.
