Carnivorous Plants
Carnivorous plants are some of nature’s most fascinating creations, using specialised leaves to attract, capture and digest insects for extra nutrients. From the sticky leaves of sundews to the colourful pitchers of pitcher plants, they offer an extraordinary variety of shapes, colours and clever adaptations. They make captivating additions to plant collections and are a wonderful way to introduce children to the world of plants.
Growing conditions vary between species. Sarracenia pitcher plants enjoy plenty of direct sunlight, while tropical Nepenthes pitcher plants generally prefer bright filtered light, warmth and humidity. Most require consistent moisture and a specialist, low-nutrient carnivorous plant mix. Use rainwater or distilled water, avoid ordinary potting mix and fertilisers, and check individual plant requirements. Some enjoy standing in shallow water, while others need good drainage. Sarracenia also need a winter dormancy period to thrive long term.
