Atractocarpus fitzalanii (Native Gardenia)
A compact Australian native rainforest shrub with glossy green foliage and highly fragrant creamy-white flowers. Naturally found in coastal Queensland, it thrives in warm, frost-free gardens and makes an excellent feature, hedge or container plant.
The fruit of Atractocarpus fitzalanii is generally regarded as edible when fully ripe, but it is not widely eaten today. When mature, the flesh softens and can be mildly sweet to insipid, containing many seeds. Unripe fruit should not be eaten, as it may be bitter or irritating. Historically, the ripe fruit was consumed in small amounts by Indigenous Australians, but it is considered more of a botanical curiosity than a desirable bushfood, with limited modern culinary use.
