Taxonomy & Naming

This species has had a somewhat tangled naming history. It has long been cultivated under several older or alternative names, including Philodendron scandens, Philodendron micans, and Philodendron cordatum. Modern taxonomy recognises these as forms or synonyms of Philodendron hederaceum, a species native to the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. The variety hederaceum specifically refers to the velvety-leaved form, often called the Velvet-Leaf or Micans Philodendron. Though the names are sometimes used interchangeably in horticulture, P. hederaceum var. hederaceum remains the most botanically accurate designation for the true velvety variety.

Growth & Care Guide

Light: Prefers bright, filtered light to maintain strong growth and vibrant leaf colour. It will tolerate lower light, though growth may slow and leaf size may reduce. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate leaves.

Water: Keep the potting mix lightly moist, watering when the top 2–3 cm feels dry. Ensure the pot drains freely—this species dislikes sitting in water. Reduce watering slightly in cooler months.

Humidity & Temperature: Thrives in warm, humid environments (20–30 °C). While tolerant of average indoor humidity, it appreciates occasional misting or placement near a humidifier, especially in dry climates. Avoid cold draughts or temperatures below 15 °C.

Soil: Use a loose, airy mix rich in organic matter—something similar to an aroid or orchid blend with added perlite or bark for good aeration.

Feeding: Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer to promote lush, velvety foliage.

Training & Pruning: Encourage compact, bushy growth by pinching out growing tips, or allow vines to trail naturally. For a climbing display, guide stems up a moss pole, where they’ll produce larger, more mature leaves.

Elegant, adaptable, and tactile, the Velvet-Leaf Philodendron adds warmth and texture to interiors—perfect for those wanting to bring the atmosphere of a tropical rainforest indoors.
